Olene Cornwell Cropper, age 88, of Gamaliel, passed away Saturday, May 15, 2010 at the Alive Hospice at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tenn.

She was born in Monroe County, KY on September 22, 1921 to the late Andrew Benton Cornwell and Emma Catherine Wood Cornwell. She was a homemaker and had worked as a store clerk at Cropper’s Market. She married James Mitchell Cropper on August 24, 1954 and he preceded her in death on July 26, 1995. She was a member of Saddler’s Chapel United Methodist Church where she taught preschool/kindergarten Sunday School for approximately 40 years.

She is survived by one son: Jerry Lewis Cropper of Gamaliel, KY, one brother: Edward Cornwell of Tompkinsville, KY. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers: Andrew, Lawrence, Kelly, Buford and Audie Cornwell, five sisters: Maudie Bell Hale, Clodean Cornwell, Lillie Murphy Woods, Mary Liilian Steen and Atler May Goad.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Strode’s Gamaliel Chapel in Gamaliel. Bro. Mark Templeton and Bro. Jeremy Yokley officiated. Burial was in the Gamaliel Cemetary.

Family requests memorial contributions be made to the Gamaliel Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Jerry Yokley, Thomas Cropper, Roger Barlow, Wyndall Marsh, Harold Wheeler, and Doug McDonald.

Honorary pallbearers were former Sunday School students: Randall Gregory, Roy Driver, Bill Wheeler, Bobby Cornwell, Ray Hammer, Mary Ann Hammer, Debra Wheeler, James Blackwell, Richard Ballard, Jack L. Cropper, Jerry Burgess, Todd Burgess, Lloyd Ford, Clio Jenkins, Peggy Jenkins, Geneva Cropper, Joanne Cropper, Hazel McDonald, Evelyn Hammer, Madge Stewart, Ruth Crowe, Dean Ford, Tracy Page, Glenda Holder, and Terry Hale.
