The Macon County 4-H senior-high outdoor meat cookery team (consisting of Layla Amons, Kara Case, Aidan Flynn and Emma Stevens) recently advanced to the state level after a third-place finish at the Central Region 4-H Outdoor Meat Cookery contest.

In addition, Flynn won first place in the senior-high lamb division, while Austin Comer took the top spot in the junior-high beef division.

The event was held at the Wilson County Fairgrounds in Lebanon on Aug. 15 and saw 13 total Macon County members take part, consisting of three teams and one individual.

Competitors had the option to prepare beef, lamb, poultry or pork for the judges over a two-hour period. They were responsible for selecting a recipe, using proper food safety and handling practices and starting up charcoal fires.

The upcoming state competition will be held on Oct. 19 at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.
