A Carthage woman was arrested after allegedly fleeing from an officer attempting to stop her vehicle in connection with an earlier hit-and-run on the Highway 52 Bypass.

Destani Rae Whittaker, 28, faces multiple charges following the incident, which took place on June 30.

According to the arrest report, Lafayette Police Department Sgt. Derrick Gann observed Whittaker's vehicle passing Hearthstone Inn and turned around to pursue it.

Whittaker allegedly accelerated down Highway 10 and continued speeding after Gann initiated his lights and sirens. Gann ended the pursuit after losing sight of the vehicle.

The report states that the victim of the hit-and-run identified Whittaker as the driver, and she also stated that she observed Whittaker driving with a "car load" of children.

Gann also checked Whittaker's license and found that it was suspended for failure to show proof of insurance.

Whittaker was later found and taken to the Smith County Jail and was then transferred to the Macon County Jail after officials received a warrant for her arrest.

She was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report, failure of driver to exercise due care, evading arrest, reckless driving, reckless endangerment and driving on a revoked or suspended license.

Whittaker's bond was set at $8,000. She is scheduled for two court dates, one on Aug. 14 to face the charges of leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report and failure of driver to exercise due care, and another on July 17 to face the charges of evading arrest, reckless driving, reckless endangerment and driving on a revoked or suspended license.
