A Lafayette man was arrested after allegedly strangling an ex-girlfriend and damaging an officer's body camera during a struggle.

Barry Jak Stafford, 37, faces multiple charges following the incident, which took place on Oct. 1.

According to the arrest report, Lafayette Police Department patrolman Elliot Sandifer was dispatched to a Main Street residence within Macon County in reference to an alleged domestic assault.

Upon arrival, Sandifer spoke to a woman who alleged that Stafford had earlier knocked on the door, forced his way into the residence, pushed her against the wall and began to strangle her. Sandifer observed marks on the woman's throat consistent with strangulation.

Stafford also allegedly took the woman's cell phone from the couch before leaving the residence and had previously contacted the woman through a dating app in violation of his order granting bail. According to the report, Stafford's photo is displayed on the profile, and he showed Sandifer text correspondence with the woman.

In addition, Stafford allegedly resisted arrest by trying to escape Sandifer's grasp and knocking patrolman Byron Butcher's body camera from his vest.

Stafford was charged with violation of an order of protection, aggravated burglary, domestic violence, theft of property, resisting arrest and vandalism.

He was not granted bond and was held for his court date, which was scheduled for Wednesday.
