A Lafayette man was arrested after he allegedly fired a shot at a family member during an altercation that took place last Wednesday.

Lonnie Adam Walters, 39, was arrested following the exchange, which took place on Red Boiling Springs Road in Lafayette.

According to the arrest report, Macon County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Jeff Tucker responded to a call at the residence. While Tucker was en route to the residence, he was informed by dispatch that one of the men had shot a firearm at another occupant living at the residence.

Once Tucker arrived, he spoke to the man who the shot was allegedly fired at and was told that Walters had been consuming alcohol all evening.

The arrest report says that Walters then made threats to the family member, that he would physically harm him, his family and law-enforcement officers.

After his family member attempted to speak to Walters, the family member said that Walters allegedly retrieved a rifle and fired a shot at him with the intent to do bodily harm. The shot did not strike the family member, but it did hit a garage where he was standing.

Tucker attempted to locate Walters at that point and found him coming out of a crawl space adjacent to the basement of the home.

Walters was detained while law enforcement searched for the weapon, which was a found in a bedroom closet that was occupied by his father-in-law.

Walters told law enforcement that he did not own the weapon, but his family member did identify the weapon as the one used to fire the shot at him earlier.

Walters said that he had consumed several prescription narcotics and said that he had overdosed.

Macon County Emergency Medical Services came out and transported Walters to Macon Community Hospital, but he refused treatment and was then transported to the Macon County Jail.

Walters is charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and possession of a firearm during commission or in an attempt to commit a dangerous felony.

His bond was set at $250,000, and his court date is slated for Nov. 20.
