A Lafayette man was arrested after allegedly choking his girlfriend in the Budget Inn and preventing her from calling the police.

Dustin Perry Key, 32, was charged with aggravated assault following the incident, which took place on April 8.

According to the arrest report, the victim had visible red marks on the left side of her throat and provided a written statement to officers regarding the incident.

Key had allegedly been drinking beer earlier in the day and became angry, shoving the victim backwards in the bathroom, grabbing her by the throat and picking her up against the wall.

The victim stated that she tried calling the police but that Key broke her phone and disconnected the hotel room's phone.

Key then allegedly left the room with vehicle keys before returning and choking the victim a second time while on top of her.

According to the statement, Key stopped after a hotel employee knocked on the door asking if someone had attempted to call the police. He then allegedly opened the door and threw the victim's belongings into the parking lot.

Based on evidence at the scene and the victim's written statement, the Lafayette Police Department arrested Key for aggravated assault.

The arrest report states that Key also had active warrants out of Sumner County.

Key's bond was set at $5,000, and his court date is slated for April 17.
