Memaw's Grocery, pictured in December 2018, has been completely torn down after the interior suffered heavy fire and smoke damage and is being rebuilt in the same location.

Memaw's Grocery is rebuilding after a fire heavily-damaged the inside of the building, and owner Charlene White hopes to have it open for business early this year.

"After I saw the damage, I made the decision to tear down and rebuild," White said. "It's going to be built back in the same place (at 5190 Scottsville Road in Lafayette), and I'm hoping it will be open within two to three months."

The fire occurred on Dec. 4, 2018, due to an electrical short near the deep fryer, and White closed the store indefinitely as she waited for an insurance estimate on the damage.

The fire was the second incident to force the store's closure this year, after a vehicle struck the building on Aug. 3. When the fire occurred, Memaw's Grocery had only re-opened for a month after completing repairs from the August wreck.

Now, with assistance from shoppers and other county residents, White is on track to get back to work.

"There are a lot of my customers and community members coming together to make this possible," White said. "My insurance wouldn't cover this on its own."

Patrons can expect to see the same selection and features as before once the grocery is rebuilt. Memaw's is known for offering home-cooked meals, such as bacon cheeseburgers, baked chicken and pancakes, in addition to its stock.

"It's a blessing to have friends like these," White said. "I'm proud to live in Macon County where we're a close-knit community that can accomplish things like this."

A locally owned, small-town grocery, Memaw's set itself apart with its selection of home-cooked meals. Visitors could choose from bacon cheeseburgers, baked chicken, pancakes and more while shopping.

It has been open for approximately 20 years.
