Local parents in need of a child care facility will soon have a new option, with Sunnyside Childcare and Preschool expected to open in Lafayette this summer.

The facility, owned by Kayci Carpenter, will hold up to 130 children ranging from age six weeks through 12 years, and it is located in the same building formerly used for the Works In Progress Daycare Center (at 2430 Red Boiling Springs Road).

"We'll be taking sign-ups (for children) within the next few weeks, and we have about 30 job openings," Carpenter said. "Some are already filled, but we have full-time, part-time and substitute-teacher positions."

Some of the employees who lost their jobs when Works In Progress closed will also have a chance to work with children at Sunnyside.

"I've had a few (former Works In Progress) employees apply," Carpenter said. "The good ones who didn't deserve to lose their jobs, I've given them opportunities."

Carpenter, a nurse with a background in pediatrics, started the process of earning a child care license through the Department of Human Services once the building became available.

"I have kids of my own, and always wanted them to have the best child care possible," Carpenter said. "We'll be operating a couple of preschool classes and plan to have several family-involved and summer activities. Each age group will have their own activity, and it should be a lot of fun."

Those interested in signing up children or applying for a job at Sunnyside may contact Carpenter by calling 615-906-1147.

"I think (this is) going to provide a lot of what has been needed in the community," Carpenter said. "Many people have been left without child care since (Works In Progress) closed, and this will help a lot of families."
