Troy Johnson

Local marathoners Troy and Cathie Johnson were recently among the six members inducted into the 2019 class of the Marathon Maniacs Hall of Fame.

In order to be inducted into the 45-member club, there are multiple criteria. The Johnsons qualified due to having completed at least 333 marathons and/or ultramarathons (which are longer than a traditional marathon).

The 65-year-old Cathie Johnson currently has completed 339, while the 72-year-old Troy Johnson is at 335.

The Johnsons are coming off their most extensive year of running. They completed 56 marathons together in 2018. Cathie Johnson actually completed 58, running two when her husband was suffering from an injury.

Entering this week, the Johnsons have completed 15 marathons in 2019, and they have 15 more scheduled, including races in New Zealand and Australia. They plan to run marathons in Idaho, Utah and Wyoming this week.

Tory Johnson actually completed marathons on three consecutive days -- from May 25-27 -- after having heart surgery on May 13.

They were inducted into the Macon County Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.

The couple owns two Guinness Book of World Records -- for having the fastest time for a married couple to complete a marathon on each continent (12 days, 3 hours, 36 minutes, and 41 seconds) and for being the oldest married couple to complete a marathon on each continent (with an aggregate age of 129 years and 109 days)
