MT. JULIET -- The Macon County Junior High boys basketball team wasn't able to maintain a strong start, producing just four points in the second half of a 33-21 loss at Mt. Juliet on Oct. 29.

The Tigers were playing without head coach Marty Maxfield, who was away from the team to be with his son (who had complications following a recent surgery).

Macon County is also currently playing without starting forward Parker Maddox, who suffered a broken arm in the preseason.

However, that didn't deter the Tigers early on.

Macon County dominated the first quarter.

Tiger guards Gabe Borders and Zach Borders combined for eight points in the opening period, and teammate Dalton Hudson made a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the quarter for a 12-4 lead.

Early in the second quarter, Hudson made a step-back 3-pointer, and Zach Borders tossed in a floater along the baseline, giving Macon County its biggest lead (17-6).

However, the Tigers managed just one basket and four points over the final 16-plus minutes.

Golden Bear seventh-grade guard Tanner Bolton tossed in a 25-footer at the first-half buzzer, trimming the deficit to five points.

Then, Bolton scored his squad's first eight points in the second half, including two 3-pointers, to place Mt. Juliet in front to stay.

Layins by Cooper Abner and Niko Duffie extended the lead to five points (24-19) entering the fourth quarter.

Then, Mt. Juliet (1-0) scored the first six points of the final period for a 30-19 lead.

Hudson made two free throws with 1:23 remaining, accounting for the only points that Macon County scored over the final 10-plus minutes.

Hudson scored a team-high 10 points, and Zach Borders provided six points.

Bolton finished with a game-high 12 points.
