JACKSON — In a showdown at the sectional tournament last Saturday night, the Macon County Tigerettes faced a formidable challenge against the Jackson South Side High School Hawks.
Unfortunately for the Tigerettes, the game unfolded with a final score of 48-23, marking the end of their season. The Hawks’ defense proved to be a relentless force, at times appearing nearly impenetrable, as they secured their victory and advanced to this week’s state tournament.
The defeat not only ended the Tigerettes’ playoff journey but also concluded their overall season with a commendable 19-14 record. Despite the setback, the Tigerettes showcased resilience and determination throughout the season, leaving an indelible mark on the court.
The game began with the Tigerettes winning the jump ball and gaining the first possession but were unable to capitalize on it.
Junior Jaidyn Askins scored back-to-back for the Jackson South Side Lady Hawks, putting her team up 4-0 early.
Sophomore Katie Jo Shockley drove through the lane shortly thereafter to score on a layup for the Tigerettes.
Junior Natalie Green was fouled under the goal and went to the free throw line hitting 1 of 2, setting the score at 4-3 with the Tigerettes down by one point.
By the end of the first period the Tigerettes were down by six points with a score of 13-7.
The second period started with South Side junior Felicity Long being fouled and she went to the free-throw line and sank both of her free throws and putting the Hawks up by eight with a score of 15-7.
Shockley scored on the next two possessions for the Tigerettes, setting the score at 17-9.
“It was a tough game and it’s definitely a hard one since we have made it this far and it ended in the substate game,” Shockley said. “We know what we can do and we’re going to come back better and stronger next year and be right back and get the job done.”
Senior Kaydence Walrond hit a 3-pointer from the right side of the court on the Tigerettes’ next possession, placing the score at 19-14 with Macon County still trailing.
Going into halftime the score was set at 24-15 with the Tigerettes still trailing. The third period was all Lady Hawks, with them out scoring the Tigerettes 16-5.
Sophomore Kaylee Slayton scored on a layup in the third period and senior Kaydence Walrond hit a 3-pointer from the side with that being the only points scored in the third period for the Tigerettes.
Macon County went into the fourth period down 20 points with the score set at 40-20.
Walrond sank another 3-pointer at the end of the fourth period for the Tigerettes but it was not enough to bring Macon County back with the final score 48-23.
